Using Virtualization to Reduce the Cost and Complexity of Software Deployment in Print Imaging
Virtualization is a disruptive technology that gives developers more control over software deployments

Competitive price pressure and a wide variety of software applications have print imaging system developers looking for ways to lower platform cost and software complexity. Virtualization addresses both of these objectives by supporting the consolidation of multiple system functions onto a single board and enabling fast, secure software migration. As a result, print imaging devices require less hardware, which reduces cost; and a single board can run multiple applications with different OSs, which minimizes software porting effort.
For example, developers can combine the functions of the system controller module and the print formatter onto a virtualization-enabled Intel® architecture platform, running both a real-time operating system (RTOS) and a general purpose operating system (GPOS). Furthermore, virtualization technology makes it easier to sustain legacy code, integrate third party applications, achieve deterministic performance and increase reliability, among other things.
This is because virtualization provides more control over software deployment, which has far reaching implications. These benefits apply to the entire suite of multifunction printers, including high-end production, enterprise, workgroup and even some consumer products.
This paper provides a brief overview of virtualization and the three types of Intel® Virtualization Technology (Intel® VT), followed by usage models in print imaging.
